The smart play for most: install solar now, start saving on electricity. Then, when you’re ready to replace your next car, buy the EV and enjoy fuel that’s already free.

Can I fully charge from solar? Yes, with 8–10 kW solar and 10 kWh+ battery.
Solar setup cost? R200,000 – R285,000.
Breakeven? ~11 years for car premium; ~11 years for solar; combined breakeven ~year 12.
Worth it? If buying solar anyway, absolutely. The Dolphin effectively drives for free.

The Bottom Line

The BYD Dolphin Surf is a R390,000 city car that costs R9,000 a year to run on grid power—already cheaper than a R240,000 Swift’s R14,000 fuel bill.
